| SC Quality Benchmark for Cod Liver Oil Capsules The benchmark used is the provision of 450mg of EPA / DHA at the recommended daily dose of the product. Cod Liver Oils should also contain a significant proportion of the RDA of Vitamin A, 100% RDA of Vitamin D and preferably Vitamin E at least at 50% RDA. |
Emulsified Cod Liver Oil has been shown to double the absorption of Omega-3.
Cod Liver Oil has been a traditional dietary supplement for generations. Its benefits come from the fact that it is a rich natural source of Vitamins A and D, and also of Omega-3s. Cod Liver Oil capsules are generally taken by people who prefer not to take the liquid due to the fishy taste of some oils. Further to this, capsules are more convenient and will aid compliance over the long term.
Quality
Some Cod Liver Oil capsules are now called ‘high strength’ because they have been enriched with other fish oils; this raises the level of the Omega-3s EPA and DHA, and generally this should be considered desirable, particularly if the recommended dosage is one per day. Of the one-a-day products here, there is a wide variation in delivery of EPA / DHA. The lowest being 85mg (Seven Seas) and the highest being over 200mg (Asda, Superdrug, Sainsburys, Holland and Barrett and Wilkinsons). If the capsules are one-a-day, it is also desirable that 100% RDA Vitamin D is provided and a significant proportion of the RDA of Vitamin A, though this does not need to be 100%. Many products also provide Vitamin E at 100% RDA, which is a valuable addition.
Products that are worthy of consideration in this review are those from Asda, Sainsburys, Superdrug and Seven Seas, although the product from Seven Seas requires a dosage of up to six capsules per day.
Value range
Value in this category has been calculated based on the price of 450mg of the combined Omega-3s EPA and DHA.
