SC Quality Benchmark for Cod Liver Oil Liquids

The standard used is the provision of a minimum of 450mg EPA / DHA at the recommended daily dose of the product, but a higher grading  is given to products providing 900mg or more per recommended dose, which is twice the recommended minimum level of these Omega-3s.  Cod Liver Oils should also contain at least 50% RDA of Vitamin A, a minimum of 100% RDA of Vitamin D. Also, the inclusion of Vitamin E at 100% RDA was considered beneficial.

As a means of significantly increasing intake of Omega-3s, Cod Liver Oil liquids are difficult to beat and are usually very cost-efficient. One teaspoon (5ml) per day typically provides 700-900mg EPA / DHA, which is well above the minimum guideline of 450mg per day. In addition, Cod Liver Oil is rich in Vitamins A, D and E.

Quality

The quality of the Cod Liver Oils assessed by SC was very high, with less fishy taste of CLO than was expected. Some products are flavoured with lemon oil for improved palatability, and this can make a huge difference for some people. The products from Asda, Boots, Holland and Barrett, Seven Seas and Superdrug all provided greater than 900mg EPA / DHA and higher than 100% RDA of Vitamins A, D and E.

The OmegaWise Cod Liver Oil emulsion from VeryWise nutrition is innovative in this category, and the absorption of Omega-3 in this form has been proven to double that of the normal liquid oil forms.

Value range

All oils reviewed here were great value for what each product contained. However, there is a range of cost of 450mg EPA / DHA, which is our benchmark, and this varied between £0.013 and £0.047 for oils, with the emulsions costing more and ranging from £0.09 to £0.18.
