Ginkgo
What is ginkgo biloba?
Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest known and widely used herbal products in both Chinese and European herbal medicine.
The product normally used is a dried extract of the leaves of the ginkgo tree.
What health benefits does ginkgo have?
Ginkgo has been shown in human experimentation to have the following effects:
1) Ginkgo causes improvements in blood flow, particularly in peripheral circulation. This means that ginkgo may be particularly helpful in people over 50 years of age where efficiency of circulation often starts to decline.
2) Ginkgo has been found to contain a number of potent antioxidant ingredients which may help to reduce the effects of damaging free radicals, particularly with regard to:
- reduction in age related decline in memory, learning and overall cognitive function
- protection of nervous tissue from free radical damage.
This again means that ginkgo may be particularly useful as we pass through middle age in helping to maintain maximum levels of mental functionality and overall health of brain and nervous tissues.
What is the effective dosage of ginkgo, and for how long?
Most trials have used between 120mg and 240mg of ginkgo extract per day, with observable benefits being generally apparent after approximately 8-12 weeks of supplementation.
What are the active ingredients in ginkgo biloba?
The extract of ginkgo contains approximately 24% ginkgo flavone glycosides and approximately 6% terpene lactones.
As 120mg of extract is the minimum effective dose this is equivalent to approximately 28mg of flavone glycosides which is the SC Quality Benchmark for Ginkgo products.
