It aims to provide consumers with all the relevant information they need to make an informed choice about which type of supplement they might need, and also offers guidance as to which to buy.

Q. How are products assessed?
Products reviewed on supplementscompared.com are a selection of the 20,000 available to consumers from supermarkets, chemists, independent retailers, mail order and internet and include the most popular brands. Every assessment is reviewed every six months to take account of reformulations.
Overall Rating
The supplementscompared.com expert panel set a quality benchmark for every type of supplement and rate each product against that standard. The supplementscompared.com quality benchmark denotes the level of ingredients the panel believe are necessary for that product to deliver its expected benefits.
Exceptional quality products are awarded “best product” and products which offer something ‘different’, such as a lack of artificial sweeteners, extra nutrients or are simply exceptionally easy to take are marked as “worth a look”.
Value Rating
The supplementscompared.com expert panel looks at how much it costs to obtain the quality benchmark in each type of supplement, calculates the range of costs between different products and then assigns each product a value rating according to where it falls in that range.

Q. How is supplementscompared.com funded?
supplementscompared.com has been devised and established by Dr Nigel Plummer who has worked in the research, development and manufacture of nutritional supplements for over 20 years. It is intended as an information centre to help build awareness of the contribution nutritional supplements may make to health maintenance and also help the consumer pick through the very complex dietary supplement marketplace and select the products most appropriate for their needs.
supplementscompared.com provides a ‘level playing field’ for supplements where each product is assessed on its merits. Any manufacturer may have their product reviewed and, unlike in the market place, branding, promotional spend and distribution channels make no difference to the outcome.
In time, supplementscompared.com plans to assess every health supplement available to consumers. However, manufacturers who wish to have their product review “fast tracked” may do so for a one off fee to cover the panel’s expenses, on the understanding that the expert panel’s decision is final and that, whatever the outcome, the review will be posted on the site.
Manufacturers who are awarded “best product” and “worth a look” are given the opportunity to promote this fact throughout the site for an additional fee.
If a consumer is particularly interested in a manufacturer’s product and clicks on the link to their website, the manufacturer will be charged a small fee whenever that link is followed.
Independent health food stores are welcome to list their shop for free on supplementscompared.com, and may further promote their store with a description and web link for a small fee.
