New Health Website Clears the Confusion

**EMBARGOED UNTIL 2nd APRIL 2008**

Millions of Britons keen to improve their health and finances could find it easier to choose a suitable health supplement and save money at the same time with a new website which launches on 2 April 2008.

Supplementscompared.com is the first comparison website designed for the nation’s health and uses a panel of medical and nutritional experts, chaired by broadcaster and best selling ‘natural lifestyle’ author Janey Lee Grace, to rate and review hundreds of popular supplements, helping to clear the confusion experienced by consumers when selecting a product from the mind-boggling estimated 20,000 available. Health supplements like multivitamins, omega 3 and probiotics are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with ten million people in the UK believed to take a supplement every day, and an estimated £350m spent on them each year.

Supplementscompared.com uncovers that:
  • An estimated 20,000 health supplements are available, but until now there has been no easy way to understand what they actually do, or what’s likely to work
  • Costs can vary by up to twelve times for popular supplements like omega 3, where the relative cost of 1000mg of active ingredient in leading brands varies between £0.12 to £1.45
  • The amount of active ingredient can vary enormously between brands: just 9 out of 14 leading multivitamins and minerals contained 100% of the Recommended Daily Amount of vitamins, and two well known brands fell “significantly below” the expected quality levels.
  • There is little evidence that expensive detox products actually deliver any benefits which wouldn’t be achieved by drinking two litres of water and eating more fruit and vegetables.
  • There is no hard and fast rule as to selecting the best supplements; expensive products and well known brands aren’t necessarily the best, but some cheap products can be ineffective and a waste of money.
  • Doses and pack sizes vary throughout the supplement market which make it hard for the consumer to compare like for like.

The panel of nutritional and medical experts at supplementscompared.com evaluate the evidence associated with each kind of supplement and explain who it’s intended for and the health benefits it can bring. Over 400 popular products are assessed and assigned a rating for the quality and value they offer. Outstanding products in each category are awarded “best product” and “worth a look” accolades.

Janey Lee Grace, Chair of the Expert Panel, explains,

“We often hear how important it is to look after our health and supplements can be a great way to do this, but with so many products on the market it’s hard to know which to choose.”

“Many people are swayed by well known brands or think it’s how much you spend that matters, but this site shows that it’s not that easy: whilst expensive products aren’t necessarily the best, some cheap products just don’t contain enough active ingredient to be effective and so are a waste of money. And as there’s no standard dose or pack size, it’s hard for the consumer to compare like for like. It’s confusing, but with the right information, it’s possible to find a good quality, good value supplement.”

“Many people are keen to improve their health but don’t know where to start. This site lets people find out about supplements for men, women and children or for a particular health need, or else allows people who already know what they’re looking for to easily compare different products. There are all kinds of comparison sites on the internet, but nothing else like this for health.”
