Families spending over the odds for omega 3
Parents could save up to the value of three family food shops each year if they switch their children’s omega 3 brand, according to new comparison website supplementscompared.com.
Parents wanting to give their children the best start in life by giving them a dose of omega 3, which has been linked to improved cognitive function and development in children, could be setting themselves back financially by around £240 per year by spending over the odds on identical amounts of omega 3.
The supplementscompared.com panel suggest that children over two should consume 450mg to see the full benefits and analysis of costs from the high street show that parents could be spending anywhere between £32.85 and £273.75 per year for this daily dose; a difference of £240.90.
Moreover, some parents are squandering money on products which offer less than a quarter of the supplementscompared.com recommended benchmark of 450mg.
Of the 16 products assessed, 5 products available in leading supermarkets and high street chemists contained less than 100mg of omega 3 which means that parents are spending money on a supplement that is unlikely to deliver the benefits associated with omega 3. These brands include Bassett’s, Morrisons, Superdrug, Asda and Sainsbury’s.
A spokesperson for supplementscompared.com said that the site aims to point people in the right direction, unveil that the most expensive and well known brands don’t always deliver the best product and reveal those supplements which are best quality and value for money.
“Many people are swayed by well known brands or think its how much you spend that matters, but this site shows that it’s not that easy: whilst expensive products aren’t necessarily the best, some cheap products just don’t contain enough active ingredient to be effective and so are a waste of money. And as there’s no standard dose or pack size, it’s hard for the consumer to compare like for like. It’s confusing, but with the right information, it’s possible to find a good quality supplement and save money too.”
