Fight breast cancer with vitamin D
Women who have higher vitamin D levels due to greater sun exposure have been linked to lower breast cancer incidence in a new study, sparking controversy and confusion around the topic of women’s health due to links between the sun and skin cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with over 44, 500 people diagnosed each year, and research published in the May-June 2008 issue of The Breast Journal linked people living closer to the equator to lower chances of developing this disease.
An expert from the supplementscompared.com panel said that it was irresponsible to encourage women to seek greater sun exposure.
“It is not a good idea to spend excessive amounts of time in the sun or use sun beds because even if it did reduce your chance of getting breast cancer it would increase the likelihood of you getting skin cancer.”
They added:
“This research adds to the bed of confusion and conflicting claims surrounding women’s health, taking a good multivitamin or eating fortified food is the safest and best option to increase your vitamin D intake and obtain overall health and wellbeing.
“supplementscompared.com discovered that buying a quality multivitamin which contains vitamin D will be better for your health and your purse strings than buying a vitamin D supplement because there is little in the cost but you get all the additional health benefits associated with a multivitamin.”
