Omega 3 linked to increased intelligence in the elderly
07 April 2008

Research published by researchers at Aberdeen University shows a link between omega 3 intake in older people and their success in intelligence tests.

It also demonstrates a genetic link which explains why some fish oil studies have been inconclusive in the past.

The researchers looked at the scores achieved in intelligence tests by 120 older people in Scotland. As well as taking the test, the people involved gave blood samples from which their DNA and intake of omega 3 could be analysed.

The results were separated according to whether the individuals possessed a crucial gene known as APOE e4 which experts believe is linked to the likelihood of contracting Alzheimer´s at an earlier age.

The results showed that those who had a higher concentration of Omega 3 in their blood, and who did not have the crucial gene, did better in tests. However, the amount of omega 3 made no difference to those who had the gene.
Professor Lawrence Whalley, the lead researcher said, "The message here is that fish oil is good for 75% of the population but don’t expect to see any mental ability benefit if you carry a genetic risk factor which makes you more susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease.
"Twenty-five per cent of the population carries this risk factor. Our findings add to the body of research that suggests that a diet high in fish oils can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
“The next big thing will be to identify what factors can influence how these genes can be switched on and off, and also what to do if you have the gene."

supplementscompared.com welcome this research which adds to the body of evidence to suggest that omega 3 has a positive effect of mental wellbeing. However, many people struggle to eat the government’s recommended two portions of fish each week and choose to supplement their omega 3 intake with another product. Yet the difference in supplements purporting to contain omega 3 can vary enormously, and it’s vital to choose one that contains a high enough amount of vital omega 3 fats to make a difference.

supplementscompared.com assess leading omega 3 and cod liver oil products against the UK Scientific Advisory Centre of Nutrition (SACN)’s advice of a minimum 450mg intake of EPA/DHA each day and rate the products accordingly.
