Increased vitamin D levels from exposure to sunlight may reduce the chance of getting breast cancer, according to a recent study from The University of California.
However, the research has faced some criticism by scientists from Yale University who feel that it is irresponsible to encourage women to seek greater sun exposure, suggesting that women should increase their intake of vitamin D through fortified foods or dietary supplements.
A spokesperson from the supplementscompared.com expert panel said that this research added to the bed of confusion surrounding women’s health.
“Women are constantly faced with competing claims and suggestions to aid their health, which can be extremely confusing.”
They added:
“It is not a good idea to spend excessive amounts of time in the sun or use sunbeds because even if it did reduce your chance of getting breast cancer it would increase your chance of getting skin cancer.
“Taking a good multivitamin is the safest and best option to increase your vitamin D intake and obtain overall health and wellbeing.
“It is definitely worth shopping around for a multivitamin because not all of them contain all 12 essential vitamins at the appropriate recommended daily allowance (RDA) and some may be overpriced for what they deliver.”
