Equazen
The fish oil-derived Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are particularly important in the continued support of cardiovascular and mental health, as well as being beneficial to joint mobility. The recommended minimum intake is 450mg EPA / DHA per day, with a scale of increased benefits up to around 2000mg per day.
This product is a mixture of Sunflower, Fish and Evening Primrose Oils, flavoured with Lemon Oil to improve the taste. It provides 244mg DHA / EPA per teaspoon. As such, this product is unlikely to deliver the benefits associated with increased intake of Omega-3. To achieve the recommended level of 450mg EPA/DHA per day, additional supplementation or intake of oily fish is advised. This product does however advise double the dosage for the first 12 weeks, which would provide 488mg of EPA/DHA. Hence it would provide above the recommended guideline intake if 450mg/day, - but for this period only. Most authorities indicate that the guideline intake is necessary for an indefinate period in order to deliver the full spectrum of expected benefits.
Unlike most products in this category, specific published research performed on this product indicates some potential benefits in improving learning capabilities in children.
The high level of Sunflower Oil in this product is difficult to explain. This product also delivers 20mg GLA from Evening Primrose Oil and 100% RDA Vitamin E, both of which may provide some additional benefits. The product is very expensive.
