The SC Quality Benchmark for Pure Probiotics

1) All probiotic products reviewed have been laboratory tested to confirm that they meet the label claim for live numbers of bacteria per dose. This is important for this category as probiotic products can be fragile during storage. The fact that all of these products have met label claim immediately defines all of these products of being of high quality.

2) Products should deliver a minimum of 1 billion live bacteria per daily dose.

3) In the opinion of the SC Expert Panel there is increasing likelihood of probiotics delivering both short and longer term benefits as the numbers of bacteria per daily dose increase from 1 -50 billion and over per day. This is taken into consideration in the assessment.

Probiotics are cultures of living bacteria, which are considered to be the most beneficial of the hundreds of types which normally inhabit the intestine. The overall idea of using probiotics is that additional benefit will be obtained if larger numbers of these ‘very’ beneficial types are ingested on a daily basis so increasing their population level in the intestine.
Because of a wealth of positive studies, probiotics are increasing recognised as being important in the maintenance of digestive and immune health, and for this reason have become one of the most popular types of supplement in the U.K.
The ability of a probiotic to deliver benefits depends upon, having the correct type of bacteria ( Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria) and the numbers of bacteria in each dose.

Quality
The quality of the products reviewed here was good, with all having a reasonable chance of delivering expected benefits. As the dosage of numbers in products increases then the likelihood of beneficial effects is greater and these are the category winners.

Value range
The value in this category is based upon the cost of 1 billion probiotic bacteria, and the range lies between £0.02 and £0.28.
