The SC Quality Benchmark

In general the minimum level of St Johns Wort found to elicit significant benefit in human studies is a daily dose providing 900 - 1000mcg of the active ingredient hypericin. This is usually provided by approximately 300mg of St Johns Wort Extract. Additional consideration is given if this daily dose is provided in one capsule or tablet.

St John’s Wort has built up a considerable reputation for the relief of mild depression and many trials have supported this effect.
Studies indicate that the minimum effective dosage of St Johns Wort extract is about 300mg per day. This dosage contains 900 -1000mcg of the active ingredient hypericin  which is the Commission E Monograph recommended dosage.

Quality
All of the 12 products reviewed are of similar quality in that all except two (Tesco & Sainsburys) provide the SC Benchmark level of between 900-1000mcg hypericin per day. As such all of these products should deliver the intended benefits. In these circumstances it pays to shop around for improved value. The Kira product from Klosterfrau appears to be well researched and has provided some of the evience for the use of St Johns Wort.

Value range
The value range is based upon the cost per 1000mcg of hypericin and within the products assessed ranged from £0.03 to £0.35.
