| SC Benchmark for Vitamin E Products 1) In the opinion of the SC expert panel, products should supply a minimum equivalent of 100iu (approx 60mg) of ‘natural’ Vitamin E per recommended daily dose; this is equivalent to 600% RDA. However, 200iu or 120mg is the more desirable target benchmark to deliver potential heart health benefits. 2) Products providing ‘natural’ Vitamin E rather than ‘synthetic’ Vitamin E are approximately 1.5 times more bioavailable. This is taken into account in the assessments. |
Although the RDA for Vitamin E is 10mg per day, people who have high intakes of fats and oils high in polyunsaturates (such as corn oil, sunflower oil and fish oils) need more, and the advice is to take about 60mg (approximately 100iu) per day. Vitamin E is needed to help prevent these oils becoming “rancid” once in the body.
Also, there is some evidence to support that individuals at increased cardiovascular risk may benefit from increasing Vitamin E intake to 200-400iu per day.
Most good multivitamin products provide 100% RDA Vitamin E, but significant increases above this level can realistically only be supplied with an individual Vitamin E supplement.

All of the products reviewed here provided above the SC recommended minimum of 100iu of natural Vitamin E equivalent, with most providing the target SC benchmark amount of 200iu. This latter group are all likely to deliver the benefits associated with increased intake of Vitamin E. The higher strength products may provide these benefits in the shorter term.
